INTERNET USE POLICY:

A signed copy must be on file at the library for everyone using the library's internet access computer.

Introduction

The Oak Run Community Library is pleased to offer a public computer and Internet access for patron use. This will allow patrons to use basic programs on a computer and to access the Internet and establish web-based email accounts.

Use is currently restricted to adults over 18 years of age. No minors will be allowed unsupervised use of the computer or Internet access.

Use of the computer is free, but any donations would be appreciated to keep the computer system up and running and to buy newer software and things like a printer and scanner. There will be a charge for the use of the printer.

Patrons must first read and understand the following acceptable use policies.

Acceptable Uses

  1. The computer has been set up in order to allow general Internet access for library purposes. This includes Patron research activities, message boards, discussion groups and other typical internet uses. If the library installs 'family filters' then some web sites may be inaccessible.

  2. Patron access is limited to 1 hour per day during normal library hours. This may be reduced to 30 minutes if lots of people need to use the web access.

  3. Library users must respect the resource limits of our old computer. Users must establish third-party web-based email accounts which will not be stored on this system. Patrons should not change computer configuration, delete programs or files or otherwise fool around with the system. If you want or need different programs on the computer, please put in a request to the Library and we'll see what we can do.

  4. Patron use of the Internet is contingent upon a signed copy of this Acceptable Use Policy.

  5. Material created and/or stored on the computer system is not guaranteed to be private. Library volunteers may review the system from time to time to ensure that the system is being used properly and to tune the system. For this reason, patrons should expect that emails, bookmarks, favorite site lists or other material placed on this computer may be viewed by a third party and may be deleted at any time.

  6. If patrons have passwords for web sites or other uses, patrons must keep their passwords private and not stored on the system. Accounts and/or passwords may not be shared. This is your responsibility, not the library's.

  7. Patrons are expected to adhere to the safety guidelines listed below.

Unacceptable Uses - Violators will lose user privileges

  1. The computer may not be used to download, copy, or store any software, shareware, or freeware. Only the designated library person can add or delete software or make changes in the system. Please don't experiment with the system or it could destroy its functions and usability.

  2. If the patron is using the computer for commercial purposes (such as using online auctions or doing business online) the patron must make sure the Library is in no way held responsible for any purchases or sales the patron might engage in. You must have your own third-party email account and not involve the library in your transactions.

  3. Use of the computer for bulk advertising or political lobbying is prohibited. It might violate our library's nonprofit status. Don't put your library at risk.

  4. This computer may not be used for any illegal activity, or to transmit any material, that violates United States or local laws. This includes, but is not limited to, illegal activities such as threatening the safety of another person, hate mail, porn, or violating copyright laws such as downloading copyrighted music, images or text.

  5. Computer and Internet users may not use vulgar, derogatory, or obscene language, period. Users may not engage in personal attacks, harass another person, or post private information about another person. Nothing is anonymous on a library computer. It's public.

  6. Computer and Internet users may not log on to someone else's account or attempt to access another user's files. "Hacking" or otherwise trying to gain access to another person's or organization's computer system is prohibited.

  7. Computer and Internet users may not access Web sites, newsgroups, or chat areas that contain material that is obscene, promotes hate, or that promotes illegal acts. If a user accidentally accesses this type of information, he or she should immediately notify a librarian.

  8. Computer users may not engage in "spamming" (sending an email to more than 10 people at the same time) or participate in chain letters.

  9. Patron's should realize that not all web sites may be accessible. This is an old computer which may not have all the upgrades/updates required or the site may be blocked by a filter.

  10. People who violate the library's internet/computer use policy will lose their computer/Internet use privileges.

  11. People who have outstanding fines or overdue books may not use the computer or Internet access until their account is current and cleared.

Safety Guidelines for Patrons

  1. Never give out your name, address, phone number, social security number, bank information or any other identity information. Watch out for scams.

  2. Never agree to meet in person with anyone you have met online.

  3. Notify the Librarian immediately if you receive a message that may be inappropriate, illegal or if you encounter any material that violates this Acceptable Use Policy.

  4. The library wants you to use the internet safely and wisely. Remember, don't do anything online you wouldn't want your spouse, children, parents or boss to know about. There is nothing 'private' about the Internet or a library computer.

Agreement for Internet Use

I have read and understand the above information about appropriate use of the computer at the Library and I understand that this form will be kept on file.
