Getting Started on the Internet: First, you should read and sign the Library's Policy on Internet Use. A copy must be filed with the Library before using the Internet service. Violation of the Library's Internet Use Policy will mean the loss of your user priveleges. You can set up one or more web-based email accounts for your use. Typically, you'll need to decide on a user name of 6 or more characters for each account and you'll also need a password for each account. You need to write your user name and password information down because it won't be kept on the Library computer. DOING ONLINE RESEARCH: Doing information searches takes practice. You can get some basic practice by using the search tools in the left-hand column of this page. Keep in mind information found online may not be from a reliable source. Just because it's on a web page doesn't mean it's true, accurate, or legal. Use common sense, particularly in looking up health information. Many people do not know that web site pages must be registered in order to be found by search tools. Each search 'engine' has a slightly different database of pages. Thus you may find different search tools are needed for certain types of searches.
DOING BUSINESS ONLINE: The Library's computer is a public computer. It is not advisable to type in personal information in online forms, or credit card information, social security number or similar sensitive information on a public computer. If you want to order something seen online, place the order from your home phone talking to a real person. The Library cannot guarantee the security of of your personal information, or of any web site, discussion group, chat group you might interact with. Be responsible. You are not at home. That being said, the world's most popular auction site is eBay. Make sure you understand how auctions work before participating.
